Sophie by South African artist Mary Sibande
(Part of Art on Paper exhibition at Gallery MOMO, Johannesburg)
I think that this might be the most poignant artistic exploration of post-apartheid South Africa that I’ve ever seen. Sibande cast her body in fibreglass and silicone to fabricate the sculpture, then painted the molded likeness, Sophie, in matte black.
